What About Electric Toothbrushes?

Electric toothbrushes are one of the most popular ways to clean your teeth, but they do come with environmental drawbacks. They accumulate toothpaste residue and debris, making them difficult to clean.

Additionally, they rely on batteries that can contribute to pollution and are challenging to recycle. Tooth Angel offers a sustainable alternative with our luxurious and eco-friendly oral care products.

We always recommend following the advice of your dentist or hygienist to choose the best oral care product tailored to your specific needs.

What About Bamboo Toothbrushes?

We support all products that help reduce plastic waste, while bamboo toothbrushes have gained popularity for their eco-friendly appeal, unfortunately they do have a significant downside.

Bamboo is prone to quick mould growth, especially when exposed to warm and damp conditions, not great for a product that lives in your bathroom! The organic nature of bamboo makes it a breeding ground for mould, compromising its hygiene and cleanliness.

How Do I Recycle My Toothbrush Heads?

We’re proud to partner with Terra Cycle, a leading recycling organisation, to ensure the responsible disposal of our toothbrush heads. Simply bring your used toothbrush heads to any participating practice or drop-off point associated with Terra Cycle, and they will handle the recycling process. Or, alternatively, you can collect your tooth angel products and free post them to an address that will go here.

My Dentist Has Been Recommending Electric Toothbrushes. Can I Get a Good Clean With a Manual Brush?

Absolutely! While electric toothbrushes have their advantages, a manual toothbrush used correctly can provide an effective and thorough clean. Our toothbrushes with soft bristles, designed by dental experts, are gentle on your teeth and gums while effectively removing plaque.

With proper brushing techniques and regular replacements, our manual toothbrushes can help you maintain excellent oral health. Remember, it’s the quality of your brushing technique that matters most.

How Do I Change the Toothbrush Heads?

Changing your Tooth Angel toothbrush heads is quick and easy! Our toothbrushes feature a convenient click-and-replace system. Simply detach the old toothbrush head and replace it with a new one by securely clicking it into place. This allows you to maintain optimal oral hygiene without the need to replace the entire toothbrush. You can learn how to recycle your toothbrush heads in the previous question.

What's the Best Toothbrushing Technique?

The best toothbrushing technique involves using gentle, circular motions to clean each tooth and the gum line. Position the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle towards the gum line and make small circular motions with the bristles. Ensure you brush all surfaces of your teeth, including the front, back, and chewing surfaces.

Don’t forget to brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen your breath. Remember to brush for at least two minutes, twice a day, and replace your toothbrush or toothbrush head every 2-3 months.

Why do you use plastic handles for your toothbrush?

Plastic is used in our toothbrush handles because it’s resistant to bacterial growth, which means that harmful bacteria is less likely to grow on your toothbrush between uses. Additionally, unlike bamboo toothbrushes, the bacteria in your mouth won’t break down your toothbrush as you use it.

Our toothbrushes are also easier to keep clean and sanitize. Usually, the toothbrush is thrown away because the bristles will warp and wear out, making them less effective at removing foreign matter from your teeth. However, our revolutionary click and replace head system allows you to replace the toothbrush head every 2-3 months whilst keeping the same durable handle, resulting in a 92% less plastic waste than normal toothbrushes.

This has also been backed by research done by UCL Eastman and Trinity College Dublin in Sept 2020. See the links to the papers on on sustainability page.

Why not use castor oil toothbrush bristles?

The use of castor oil toothbrush bristles is often promoted as an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional toothbrush bristles made from materials like nylon. While there are some potential benefits to using castor oil-based bristles, the extent of these benefits can be considered marginal, and it can be viewed as a form of greenwashing in some cases. Here’s why:

  1. Limited Environmental Impact: Castor oil-based bristles are sometimes marketed as a more sustainable option because castor oil is a renewable resource. However, the overall environmental impact of toothbrushes, even those with castor oil bristles, is relatively small compared to other consumer products. Most toothbrushes are discarded after a few months of use, and the primary environmental concern is still the proper disposal of the toothbrush, rather than the type of bristle material.
  2. Energy and Resource Intensive Production: The production of castor oil-based bristles may involve energy-intensive processes and resource consumption. To make them durable and effective, these bristles are often mixed with other materials, which can negate some of the environmental benefits associated with castor oil. Additionally, transportation and manufacturing processes may contribute to the carbon footprint of the product.
  3. Lack of Independent Certification: Some products that claim to use castor oil bristles for their toothbrushes may not have undergone rigorous third-party certification for their environmental claims. This lack of transparency and verification can be a form of greenwashing, where companies exaggerate or overstate the environmental benefits of their products without providing concrete evidence.
  4. Disposal and Biodegradability: Even if castor oil-based bristles are biodegradable, they may not decompose significantly faster than traditional nylon bristles in typical landfill conditions. Proper waste management and composting facilities are required for effective biodegradation, which may not be available in all areas.
  5. Minimal Consumer Impact: Switching from nylon to castor oil bristles in a toothbrush is a relatively small change in an individual’s overall environmental impact. It is often more important to focus on broader lifestyle changes and sustainable habits, such as reducing plastic waste and conserving energy, to make a significant difference in one’s ecological footprint.

In conclusion, while castor oil toothbrush bristles may offer some marginal environmental benefits over traditional nylon bristles, the overall impact is limited. The use of castor oil-based bristles should be viewed as just one small step in a broader effort to reduce the environmental impact of personal care products. Additionally, consumers should be critical of companies’ environmental claims and look for third-party certifications to ensure the legitimacy of such claims, as greenwashing is a concern in the market.

Why do you have plastic covers with your toothbrush heads?

We carefully considered this question, consulting with dentists, therapists, and hygienists in focus groups. The consensus was that plastic covers offer enhanced hygiene in the bathroom and convenience while traveling. Additionally, our toothbrushes originate from Italy, and we prioritize keeping the bristles in pristine condition until they reach you. Rest assured, all our products are 100% recyclable, including these covers, which can be disposed of in your household recycling or through our Tooth Angel Zero Waste Boxes available at registered dental practices.

How Do I Use the Tooth Angel Floss?

Using the Tooth Angel floss is simple and effective for maintaining optimal oral health. Take a piece of floss, approximately 15-18 inches long, and wind it around your fingers, leaving a small section to work with. Gently guide the floss between your teeth using a back-and-forth motion, making sure to go below the gum line. Curve the floss around each tooth and move it up and down to remove plaque and debris. Repeat this process for each tooth, using a clean section of floss for each space. Incorporate flossing into your daily oral care routine to promote healthy gums and a fresh, clean feeling.
